The volcanic trip to Khao Kradong

Just a few minutes' drive from the town, the extinct volcano of Khao Kradong offers a serene haven with a great viewpoint of Buriram.

The narrow Naga staircase in pastel pink runs straight to the top of a half-moon-shaped hill. The name Khao Kradong comes from Khmer words Phnom Kradong, which means a mountain with the shape of a turtle shell.

Blanketed with a small forest, the Khao Kradong Forest Park is home to wild animals and indigenous plants. The mountain is actually an extinct volcano. Its crater now turns into a pool with a rope bridge hanging over it. Volcanic rocks found across the area mirrored volcanic activities once covered the area.

At the mountain top, climbers will be rewarded with the bird’s eye view of Buriram countryside, Khmer ruins, a Buddha footprint, and gigantic Buddha image Phra Suphattharabophit which is considered Buriram Province’s symbol.

An annual festival is held on the full moon night in the fifth lunar month, which usually falls in April. During such time, Khao Kradong turns alive.

In recent years, Buriram becomes a popular destination where people flock to watch major football tournaments at a 36,000-seat Chang Arena soccer stadium and the world-class Buriram International Circuit which regularly hosts big motorcycle and car racing events.

Climb Khao Kradong for a peaceful moment before spending your day in full swing at the Buriram’s famous soccer stadium and the racing circuits.

How to get there: Buriram is 243 miles northeast of Bangkok via highway 24 and 218.
