The laid-back Karen market of O Poi.

The laid-back Karen market of O Poi.

Located on a bank of the Phachi River, O Poi market is the new attraction in Ratchaburi’s Suan Phung district.

The morning market is initiated by the community of Ban Tha Makham as the locals wanted to have a marketplace to showcase food and local products of Karen ethnic people.

They call the market “O Poi.” The Karen word means relaxation as the market has the laid-back atmosphere amidst the lush green area of the village.

Activities start in the morning when visitors offer alms to monks who will ride a bamboo raft to the market at around 7.30 am. After making merit, you can blend into the Karen village by renting a Karen costume while shopping in the riverfront market.

Choices of must-try food are miang kham (a betel leaf wrap snack) served with thua dao inca or Inca nut instead of peanuts, khanomchin namya yuak kluay (fermented rice noodle with banana trunk curry) and khao yam samunphrai (spicy, sweet and sour rice dish served with a selection of fresh vegetables and flowers). There are also outlets selling woven clothes, handmade products, DIY items and Karen dresses.

If you like to explore Ban Tha Makham, bicycles for rent with tour guides are also available.

O Poi market is open every weekend from 7am to 2pm.
