Strolling through culturally rich Amphawa

In less than two-hour drive from bustling Bangkok, the countryside of Amphawa presents a lovely choice for weekend retreat for those who are looking for an escape from the city. The culturally rich district of Amphawa, Samut Songkram Province, is now packed with attractions where you can quickly tour in a day. Listed below are five top places you should not miss.

Amphawa Floating Market is the mecca of local delicacies. More than a hundred shops, stalls, coffee shops, restaurants, and boats, of course, pack the lively marketplace and attract thousands of foodies. You can stroll around, testing fresh seafood, herbal drinks, or authentic Thai cuisine there.

If you do not know Thai traditional dessert well, you may learn all about them at the Thai Dessert Museum, where you will have an exposure to an array of exhibitions displaying replicas of actual desserts and plenty information about the delicacies.

A unique place in Amphawa is Khai Bang Kung, a naval camp dating back to the ancient Ayutthaya period over two centuries ago. The neglected chapel is covered with tree roots that grow on it but left the entrance open for visitors to pay homage to the Buddha statue inside.

For feline lovers, Thai Cat Center is their dream place. The center keeps more than a hundred cats, and pure Thai cat breeds, notably Khao Manee Cat, which is famous for its beautiful eye color, and Wichien Maat or the so-called “Siamese Cat”.

The peaceful adjacent district of Bang Nok Kwaek may surprise you with a glorious church. The Nativity of Our Lady Cathedral, of which history can be dated back to over 130 years, attracts visitors with its French-Gothic architectural style and elegant interior decoration.

If you want an detour from the busy Bangkok for a while, a day trip to Amphawa will render you a colorful choice.

How to get there: Amphawa is 60 miles west of Bangkok via highway 35.
