Sok Phidip : the haunted landscape of Khon Kaen
Details

Sok Phidip

For millions of years, the natural force has carved out the rocks at Sok Phidip in Khon Kaen province, into a unique scenery which offers a great photo opportunity.

The eroded landscape of Sok Phidip ignites your imagination as the sandstones were presented into weird different forms. The strange-shaped cliffs and columns form a forest of stone which fills the place with haunted atmosphere.

The word “Sok Phidip” literary means "eroded zombies." The venue got its chilling name since 1937 when cholera claimed many lives in villages nearby. The folks could not cope with a massive funeral, so corpses were neglected here. This background added fear to this lonely place.

But geologists found it a delicate artwork made by the Mother Nature. Since 65 million years ago, the natural forces have made land fissured in the north-south as well as the east-west direction. Later, the weathering and rain eroded the fissures vertically and horizontally, leaving the well-carved sandstones at last. Its unique scenery makes this place a famous landmark nowadays. Sok Phidip is also honored as a perfect testimony of Isan’s geology.

After exploring the landscape, you can also pay a visit to adjacent villages which are famed for hand-woven silk fabrics in Isan traditional patterns and bamboo sticky rice container.

How to get there: Sok Phidip is located in Phol District of Khon Kaen province, some 48 miles south of the downtown via highway 2. Free admission.

Khon Kaen is 279 miles northeast of Bangkok via highway 2.
