Shopping in Muslim ambience at Talat Mod Tanoi

Opened only once a month, Talat Mod Tanoi is a local market founded by a Muslim community in the Thung Khru district of Bangkok.

Located along Bang Mod Canal and around Nurulhuda Masjid in Phutthabucha Soi 36, the market offers a wide variety of Halal food. Try the grilled chicken or grilled meat, roti, meat-filled mataba, deep fried chicken, Yam Kanom Jeen (sour and spicy fermented noodle dish served boiled egg and fresh vegetable), Chicken Biryani and Khao Tang Na Kai (crispy rice snack topped with flossed chicken).

A boat cruise is also available. It will take you along the Bang Mod Canal. You can stop at a coconut plantation and an orange farm to drink sweet coconut water or try the great sweet Bang Mod orange. This orange variety is hard to find somewhere else.

Some houses on the market are open for workshops including fabric painting, sculpturing or the production of Luk Chub (brightly colored sweets made from mung bean flour to resemble miniature fruits and vegetables).

Talat Mot Tanoi is open from 9am to 5pm on the second Sunday of every month. For more information, visit facebook.com/Taladmodtanoi or call 081-552-4643 and 083-695-5616.

How to get there: After crossing the bridge over the Chao Phraya River on the expressway, take the Suksawat Road exit, make a U-turn and turn left onto Pracha-Uthit Road. At a T-junction, turn right onto Phutthabucha Road. There you will see Phutthabucha Soi 36 and follow the signs to Nurulhuda Masjid.
