Sampanbok and Hat Chom Dao, the amazing canyon on Mekong River

The country’s biggest rock reef in Mekong River, Sampanbok in Ubon Ratchathani province, is made up of sandstone cliffs that runs windingly along the mighty river. For millions of year, severe erosion by the fierce river carved out the rock and shape up a small canyon

Climb up the rock wall, at 22 feet high and 65 feet wide that lies in the middle of the Mekong River, and you will be amazed with countless holes, basins and the breathtaking landscape of rock. Hence the name of Sampanbok which means “3,000 holes”.

Known as the Grand Canyon of Thailand, Sampanbok offers a great photo opportunity among the biggest rock reef in the Mekong River. Roam the weird landscape of rock, you will feel like walking on another planet.

If you like Sampanbok, you may like Hat Chom Dao too. A vast rock plain is carved out by the river, which leaves a number of holes and rock formation in various shape during the dry season. In size, Hat Chom Dao is rather bigger than the famous Sampanbok. It stretches hundreds of yard wide, with a towering cliff and a steep canyon. There is a small rock in the mid of the water which offers very good angle for photo, too.

Besides sunrise and sunset view, the rock plain is a perfect site for stargazing. In late summer when Mekong River runs dry, white sandy beach stretches over a mile, and turns into a great scenic place.

How to get there: Sampanbok and Hat Chom Dao are situated in Khongjiam District of Ubon Ratchathani, 75 miles from the city, via highway 2112. Sampunbok can be accessed by boat only. Because of day’s heat, the both sites should be visited in early morning or in the evening.
