Koh Kut : Hideout Haven of the East

Swimming in the crystal-clear water or sunbathing on a quiet and soft white beaches are among top activities you can do when you visit  Koh Kut in Trat, the easternmost island before the Cambodian border in the Gulf of Thailand.

Located to the south of the Trat’s largest island of Koh Chang and the tiny green island of Koh Mak, Koh Kut (also spelled Koh Kood) is considered a bit remote. The island is about 80km away from the mainland.

At 40,000 acres, Koh Kut is home to about a few thousand people. Most of them are fishermen and farmers who grow rubber, fruit and coconut trees for a living. Since Koh Kut does not have a nightlife attraction, it is a destination for those who love to stay close to nature or for honeymoon couples who will love romantic sunset at Aow Phrao beach and for family-goers who love outdoor activities.

While staying on the island, you can have a day trip to snorkel around or to nearby islands such as Koh Rang and its vicinities. You can also kayak along the coastal area or along Khlong Chao waterway. Along the river, you will see marine lives around the dense mangrove forest area.

Another popular outdoor activity is to trek through the green forest areas and swim in the two popular Khlong Chao and Huang Nam Khieo waterfalls. The falls are also the main freshwater resource on the island.

There is no public transportation on the island. You can travel around Koh Kut by renting a motorcycle, a bicycle or rent a songthaew. The hilly two-lane concrete road is in good condition. It links the northern part to the south, but not to the southern tip because it is a restricted area for the navy station.

Koh Kut has various choices of accommodations raging from bungalows to five-star hotels.

How to get there : Take a 60-90 minute speedboat ride (www.kohkoodboat.com) or a 75 minute fast ferry service (www.kokutexpress.in.th) from Laem Sok pier in the mainland to the island.
