Khao Chong Lom: Hidden Valley behind the Dam

 

Just behind the large reservoir of Khun Dan Prakanchon Dam lies the picturesque valley of Khao Chong Lom, secluded from the bustling crowds.

With a simple boat ride from the reservoir, you will find yourself in the middle of the green of a hidden valley. After the water decrease, the flooded area becomes large meadows. A narrow waterway runs at the bottom of the valley, dotted with gigantic rocks brought by strong stream and flood during the rainy season.

It is a refreshing green lanscape with many opportunities to take pictures. Spend a few hours here and relax. You will recognize the hidden beautiful forest just behind the dam.

“Khao Chong Lom” refers to the mountain of wind channel. The name comes from the winter breeze that blows through the valley.

November is the best time to visit Khao Chong Lom when the reservoir is filled up and the boat can approach the valley. At the dam, a chartered boat to Khao Chong Lom is available. The journey takes only 15 minutes, passing four waterfalls on the way namely Pha Ngam Ngon, Khlong Kram, Ton Nam and Chong Lom.

Khun Dan Prakanchon Dam itself is an attraction. Its structure is 1.8 mile long and nearly 1,000 feet high and can make you stunned at the first glance. Once you climb up the dam wall, you will be impressed by the scenery of the vast waterscape. The reservoir is an ideal place for ecotourism where visitors can cruise, windsurf, and kayak.

 

How to get there: Nakhon Nayok is approximately 100 kilometers from Bangkok accessible via Highway 305. The boat service to Khao Chong Lom is available at the dam and costs around 1,000 baht per trip. The journey takes three hours.
