Get to know the mountain and the Miang at Mae Kampong

Get to know the mountain and traditional Miang snack at Mae Kampong

Hidden on a lush mountain at 4,200 feet above the sea level, the peaceful tiny village of Mae Kampong, Chiang Mai, turns into an offbeat retreat for those who dream of a rustic way of life.

Amidst the chilling morning mist, villagers put on their long boots and baskets, and scoot out for the best tea leaves they can find. With a tiny blade attached to their fingers, the leaf collectors pick up fresh young leaves of Assam tea. They also picked the leaves to make Miang, a local herbal snack of northern Thailand.

For decades, making "Miang" is the main occupation of Mae Kampong villagers. With the cool mountain breeze and way of organic farming, the Assam tea trees at Mae Kampong never stop putting forth fresh leaves and nourish the whole village. Such comfortable weather and pristine environs makes Mae Kampong a perfect haven for a city escape. Though it does not offer luxurious facilities, its homestay services naturally impress visitors with lush jungle, clean streams, waterfall, and tasty local meals not available in city of Chiang Mai.

Stroll around, Mae Kampong will amaze you with its relaxing lifestyle in the mountain. Anyway, if you want to see how lush the mountain is, the famous zip line Flight of the Gibbon offers a rare viewpoint from tree canopies as well as an excitement of gliding through them.

How to get there: Mae Kampong, in Mae On District, is 33 miles east of Chiang Mai City via highway 1317. Scheduled van leaves Chang Puak Bus Terminal and Waroros Market for San Kamphaeng Hot Spring and Mae Kampong. The ticket costs 120 baht per person.

During long holiday, the small village of Mae Kampong turns chaotic when its narrow road is overwhelmed with tourists' cars.  Making a visit on the weekday is the best choice.
