Full swing at Udon Thani

One of Isan's transport and commercial hub, the bustling city of Udon Thani is endowed by a number of attractions. Hang around for three days and you will find that the city has much more to offer.

Udon Thani is quite rich in history. In Ban Chiang, at its northwest corner, Bronze-aged pottery and remains of human settlement during prehistoric times were uncovered. The prehistoric village was inhabited from 1500 BC until probably 300 AD. It is best known for red painted pottery typically found there in large numbers.

At the south of Ban Chiang, make your way for a viewpoint at Phu Foi Lom Eco Park. Situated on a plateau, the eco-tourism destination is famed for a variety of lichen, rare plants, and mild adventurous activities. It is ideal to visit during the annual Daffodil festival, in December and January, when all flowers are in full bloom.

Next morning, exploring the archeological sites of Phu Phrabat Historical Park will bring you to delve deeper to Udon Thani's historical significance. Phu Phrabat is known for its unique rock formations and religious shrines scattered around the area. These pillars, boulders and balanced rocks are carved out by the under-sea erosion 15 million years ago. Some ancient cave arts on the rocks can be dated back to 6,000 years ago. The Buddhist and Hindu shrines found in the park were from the 7th to 10th Century.

Udon Thani has a vibrant nightlife with a great selection of fine dining restaurants and cool bars. Roam the Teekatananon and Sampantamit Road, then make your choice for the impressive night.

Complete your trip to Udon Thani at Nong Prajack Park can be a nice retreat. Situated west of the city center, the landscaped park offers a spacious green area for recreation.

How to get there:  Udon Thani is 350 miles northeast of Bangkok via highway 2. Many local airlines have daily services between Bangkok and Udon Thani.
