Artful Atmosphere at Artist’s House

The two-storey wooden house of Ban Sinlapin or the Artist’s House stands out from other houses in the neighborhood. Locating on the bank of Bangkok Yai canal, aka Khlong Bang Luang, the 200-year old house has traditional Thai architecture. It also has the remarkable two life-size sculptures of bald men in white and orange. The art objects sit on a wooden walkway in front of the house. They seem to look at canal view or tourist boats passing by.

The property used to be a grocery and also gold shop, the main business for people living in Khlong Bang Luang since Thonburi period. More than a decade ago, Chumpol Akkapantanon and his artist friends brought this two-storey house and renovated it for their office and exhibition gallery of their paintings and photographs. It also has art activities for public to join since it has been opened in 2009.

Additionally, in a corner of the property stands a white pagoda which is believed to belong to a temple built since the Ayutthaya period. Today, the pagoda is served as a background stage for puppetry performances presented by a troop who used to work for the internationally renowned Joe Louis Puppet Theatre.

When you visit the Artist's House, you can see the performance as well as learn about numerous types of arts such as making a papier-mache mask, crafting a graphic art as a cover of your notebook and coloring cute cartoon sculptures. The house also has a coffee corner and a souvenir shop. If you have more time, you can walk around the long wooden walkways along the canal to absorb the old ambience of Bangkok’s canal-side communities.

The Artist's House is open from 10am-6pm during Monday to Tuesday, 9am-6pm during Wednesday to Friday and 9am-7pm during weekends. The puppet show performs at 2pm every day except Wednesday.

How to get there: Drive along Phetkasem Road to Wat Khuha Sawan in Phetkasem Soi 28. Then take a little walk to the house. An alternative is to hire a long tail boat from Sathon (Saphan Taksin Bridge), Pak Khlong Talat and Tha Chang piers. For more information call 02-868-5279.
