Nakhon Si Thammarat

The sky-piercing peak of Khao Luang which is always covered with clouds and fogs might seem hard to climb. However, a while after the rain in the middle of winter or in the early year can be a proper time to climb to the peak of Khao Luang in Nakhon Si Thammarat Province. The height of it is designated the roof of the south of Thailand because it is the highest among Nakhon Si Thammarat Range.Climbing to the peak of Khao Luang: Owing to the height of 1,835 meters above sea level, the only way to climb Khao Luang is trekking. It takes 3 days and 2 nights or more in this return trip. The starting point is in Khiri Wong village. First, the travelers will walk past the villager's fruit gardens, such as jackfruit, langsat, long kong, mangosteen, and wintergreen. After passing the gardens, there will be Wang Ai Yang Waterfall. Then, the travelers have to climb up the mountain past jungle of giant fern or "Tree Fern" that grows along the entire brook. The route up to Khao Luang is a tropical rain forest. The higher the climbers climb, the smaller the trees become. The mountain is pervaded with vapor. When the climbers reach the mountain ridge, it means they are very close to the peak. The scenery of the crowded forest makes it look so grand once it is seen from the top of the mountain. The travelers can also see Laem Talumphuk at the sea beneath. The weather here is cool and pleasant. There is a small space for camping on the mountain slope. Watching the sun rises in the morning from the top of the mountain is such a breath-taking view that anyone should not miss. Monsoons from the sea that carry the rain to the mountain throughout the year makes Khao Luang never experience the dryness or shed leaves. From the city center of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, take the highway number 4015 (Nakhon Si Thammarat- Lan Saka) for 29 kilometers, then turn right to the park office and continue for another 3 kilometers. The total distance from the city center of Nakhon Si Thammarat Province to Khao Luang National Park is 32 kilometers. Tel. 0-7530-9047, 0-7530-9644-5Ban Khiri Wong Eco-tourism Club.
