Thai Boat Museum is a private museum located at Bang Ian Road opposite to Wat Mahataat. It is in the area of Ajarn Paitoon Khawmala who loves Thai boats and has a spiritual bond with boats and river since childhood. He was also a naval architecture teacher throughout his whole entire life at Shipbuilding Technical School. He built up this Thai Boat Museum to be a local wisdom study centre of Thai boats.
First section: Ancient Boat Building exhibiting real ancient Thai boats. Some are more than 100 years old, for example a long dugout (Cha La in Thai) made of teak wood, a dugout with shack (Maad Geng in Thai) made of whole trunk of iron wood, Moo boat and Ma sailing boat. Incidentally, there is a permanent exhibition of knowledge about Thai boats, drawings of boats by Ajarn Paitoon and Ayutthaya map, manuscript by an Amerian who loved Ayutthaya history and sailing, Mr.Ken May, showing temples and rivers in ancient time.
Second section is a Thai style building made of golden teak wood exhibiting boat models made by Ajarn Paitoon: Thai Royal boats, variety of junk and ancient ship building equipments.
The third part is outdoor, showing huge boats such as Kra Chaeng boat made of teak wood, a model of Suvanvijitr boat made of whole iron wood trunk and a motor boat named "Paitoon Ratanava", designed and built by Ajarn Paitoon himself 40 years ago. In addition, there are Sumpun boats selling coffee, noodles and Thai desserts which were repaired in a good shape. Boat building demonstration is also available.
