As the former capital of an expansive kingdom it should come as no surprise that Thai food in Ayutthaya includes dishes that are more typically associated with other regions of the country. Sticky rice, som tam, khan toke, and roti sai mai have greatly different culinary roots, but have become integral aspects of Ayutthaya cuisine. Foreigners can even find many favorites from home at restaurants serving various western dishes, though the more adventurous will be greatly rewarded by sampling local specialties, including Kung Maenam Pao, grilled river prawns, especially when served alongside the river from which they were caught or upon a boat sailing past the majestic ruins of the old city.
Many of Ayutthaya’s restaurants are located near the accommodation areas, particularly along the main thoroughfare, Naresuan road, where visitors can dine on barbeque, vegetarian, western fast food, and street-stall Thai food. However, there are various areas that specialize in particularly types of cuisines and provide vastly different atmospheres.
