Festivals and events are perhaps more common in Bangkok than in any city in the world. Thai people love to celebrate; they even commemorate Thai, Chinese, and Western New Years; regardless of origin, holidays cause the city to come alive in celebration. In addition to unofficially enjoying a number of foreign holidays, Buddhist holidays and those that honor the kingdom’s royal family or history of independence and democracy are an integral part of the people's lives.
Most Buddhists festival and holidays are based on a lunar calendar so the dates they are celebrated on vary from year to year according to the Gregorian calendar. Several holidays, Buddhist or otherwise, require celebrants to return to their home towns in order to pay respect to their family, ancestors, or local Buddhist temple. During these holidays Bangkok becomes a bit of a ghost town while millions of residents return to their home provinces to celebrate.
While some religious and governmental holidays require a ban on the sale or consumption of alcohol, there are many other celebrations that feature food and drink in addition to music, theater, fashion, or artistic showcases. Bangkok has many open-air venues that contain multiple stages for music as well as copious amounts of food, drink, and activities for families and foreigners alike.
In addition to national holidays and festivals, which are typically celebrated with great fanfare in Bangkok, the following are some that are specific to Bangkok or are particularly enjoyable in the capital city:
