Train
Trains are a great way for you and your family to get around Thailand and have an adventure in the process. Not to mention the savings you’ll accrue by not flying everywhere, as well as sleeping on the train and not paying for a hotel room (or two) each night.Use your savings to extend your trip or add another destination to your itinerary.
Most passengers choose 2nd Class Air-Conditioned cars.First Class is available, but there are only two bunks per cabin.Third Class is not advised for long trips, since these are simply benches, but they’re fine for the short trip to Kanchanaburi, for example.
The overnight train to Chiang Mai is very popular, as well as the overnight train that rolls into Isan, Thailand’s rural northeast region, all the way to Nong Khai on the border with Laos. The train south is a long haul, and you might think twice about this option if you have small children in tow, who could get a tad stir crazy; on the other hand, they may discover their inner “train nut” and totally love the experience.
