Pasin Lathouras is pleased to confirm that he will contest the 2014 British GT Championship driving for AF Corse. After the early years of his career have been spent primarily racing across Asia, this season’s programme represents a major step forward into the heartland of world-class professional motorsport, England.
The British GT Championship is recognised by many as the most professional domestic sportscar championship in the world and is contested by professional and factory supported drivers at the wheel of the latest FIA GT3 specification machines. It is a key breeding ground for the international sportscar stars of the future. In fact further cementing this ‘stars of tomorrow’ image is that the British GT Championship shares its event programme format with the British F3 Championship, long regarded as the best route for youngsters to get up the ladder to Formula 1.
As such Pasin sees the 2014 British GT Championship as the perfect route to take his career forward to the next level, the Thai driver looking forward to going up against established sportscar drivers in front of the world of international motorsport.
Since his switch from single-seaters to sportscars two years ago Pasin's career rise had been impressive. For 2012, at just 18 years old, he swapped his Formula BMW Asia single-seater for a Ferrari 458 Challenge to contest the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific and he was vice-champion at his first attempt. Last year, his second in the prestigious series, saw him go one better and win the title, taking an astounding nine wins from the fourteen races and in fact winning the last seven consecutively as he left his much more established rivals trailing. All that as the youngest driver on the grid.
As well as the Ferrari Challenge Asia Pacific, last year the Thai youngster contested the Ferrari Finali Mondiali at Mugello in Italy last November, the end of season competitive showpiece Ferrari racing event that brings the world's best ‘Prancing Horse’ race drivers together, where he made a massive impression.
In 2013 Pasin also took part in the Merdeka 12 Hours at Sepang for AF Corse where he was paired with Mika Salo and they led for more than half the race before mechanical issues required a lengthy pitstop, although they fought back after this setback to finish an impressive third overall. Pasin also contested a Superstars GT round at Italy's famous Autodromo Monza where he finished on the podium, took a double win on his debut in GT Asia Series and also joined Thailand Super Series for the first time. Now it is time to build on that excellent season and take another career step forward.
For his first shot at the British GT Championship, Pasin, who turned 20 years old last month, will be back with AF Corse and the youngster is delighted that the crack Italian team has chosen him in their lineup. He's also pleased to continue racing in a Ferrari 458 GT3, a racecar he knows well as he embarks on what will be yet another tough learning year.
Pasin’s teammate will be announced later.
The British GT Championship is promoted by SRO, the organisation behind the FIA GT World Championship, and that has given the popular series the bedrock to evolve into arguably the world's most competitive national series for GT3 cars. All the latest GT3 machines, many factory run or supported, will be on the grid this year, a roll-call that includes Porsche, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz, McLaren, Bentley, BMW, Audi, Maserati, Lamborghini, Nissan and Camaro - as well as Ferrari.
This year the series will comprise of seven rounds, kicking off in just under three months time at Oulton Park in the North West of England before ending five months later at Donington Park in the East Midlands. Highlights of the year will include visits to two current Formula 1 circuits, Silverstone, the long time home of the British Grand Prix, as well as an overseas trip the series will make to Spa-Francorchamps, the legendary circuit in the Ardennes Mountains that hosts the Belgian Grand Prix. Two former Formula 1 tracks are also on the calendar, Brands Hatch as well as Donington Park.
Pasin Lathouras: "I'm delighted that this programme has come together, it's been my dream to race in Europe which is for sure the best place to further my career. I’ve had two successful years in the Ferrari Challenge so I think I’m ready for British GT although it’s going to be a big, big test for me and another learning year. But I will try my best and look forward to representing Thailand again and to deliver for all the people and sponsors who have supported me so much so far. I’m also really pleased to be racing for AF Corse, they’re one of the top professional teams with great engineers and they pushed me on in the races I drove for them last year so I’m so it’s good to have another opportunity to race for them, plus I know the Ferrari GT3 car well now. So really I can’t wait for the season to start and I’m excited to find out who my team mate will be.”
