Tour Overview :

The Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall is famous not only for its Renaissance architecture, but equally because its impressive dome houses magnificent frescoes depicting the activities of the Royal House of Chakri Dynasty, from the reign of King Rama I to that of King Rama VI.

The Throne Hall is a massive, gleaming white structure, topped with a huge central dome surrounded by six smaller ones; and reminiscent of many historic buildings in Europe and North America.  The front facade of the Throne Hall is approached from the south by a ten-lane wide, tree-lined avenue leading up to it.

Inside the Throne Hall, the Kingdom’s artistic masterpieces are on display; created by the finest artists from villages all over the country.  These artists were encouraged and trained by the Support Training Center at the Chitralada Villa of Dusit Palace in Bangkok, under the royal patronage of Her Majesty the Queen. You will be totally amazed by the impressive quality and variety of art to be seen inside the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.

Day by Day Itinerary :

Date 1 : 8.00 - 11.00

08.00   Depart from the hotel by private car to the Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall.

09.00   Tour the interior of this splendid architectural achievement. This Renaissance building was inspired and constructed by Rama V in 1907. It was originally intended to be used as an assembly hall for royal receptions. The Italian architect, Tamango, designed The Ananta Samakhom (Anantasamakom) Throne Hall and National Assembly Building, in the Renaissance style.

Ceiling frescoes create the impression of a “Sistene Chapel of Thailand.” The frescoes depict the Chakri Dynasty, and feature important works of art in the domes commissioned by King Rama I and King Rama VI. The rotunda above the Royal Throne also contains an image of the Lord Buddha which has been used for state ceremonies. From 1907 to 1915 a team of Italian architects collaborated on the design of the marble throne hall.

Construction was completed during the next reign. The building serves as a venue for royal and state ceremonies, and was once used as the National Assembly, before that was moved to the new building behind it. After 1932, it became the official seat of the National Assembly; but the kingdom of Thailand has had eighteen coups since then.

On July 21, 1976, the SUPPORT foundation of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit was officially established to promote local arts and crafts, also providing assistance in supplementing the income of underprivileged families. During regular regional visits, Her Majesty would meet with villagers to informally listen to their opinions and problems, while inspecting their latest handiwork.

The Queen met with promising new artists, who would later be sent to train in Bangkok.  With such encouragement, villagers were excited and willing to cultivate even greater skills for handling more intricate designs, from weaving to Yan Lipao basketry, and complicated wooden carvings.

In 1979, the SUPPORT Training Center at Chitralada Villa of Dusit Palace in Bangkok was founded. Leading artisans in traditional fields of arts and crafts provided further skills training to selected students from villages. These students would then return to their own communities and share their newly acquired knowledge.

Her Majesty the Queen also encouraged the restoration and maintenance of traditional arts in each region, especially those regarded as possessing great significance to the national heritage. The SUPPORT Training Center, therefore, performs a key function in preserving ancient arts which were in danger of extinction. After a decade of contributions, the SUPPORT Training Center on the grounds of Chitralada Villa of Dusit Palace celebrated with a grand exhibition, followed by a series of additional exhibitions in later years.

The rear half of the building features a museum highlighting fine Thai handicrafts; wonderful silver and gold artifacts; as well as very fine basketwork, pottery, leatherwork, ceramics and wood carving. There is also an intriguing display of doll's house-sized items, perfect in every minute detail.

10.00   Return to the hotel, or you may choose to be dropped off for shopping or other activities.
