Tour Overview :
Join us on a 5 hour tour of either the Wetlands or Flowerlands of Nong Khai. We begin each of our tours with a brief overview of the routes we will take, followed by an orientation of the bikes we will be using and lastly enjoy a quick high fuel snack and beverage before heading out.
Wet Lands - The Wet Lands is an area about ten kilometres to the east of Nong Khai where you can see fishing cranes... some of the worlds largest working bamboo machines. This low lying district is a maze of meandering creeks in the dry season and becomes a series of islands in the monsoon. Here you are really stepping back in time to a peaceful way of life that has remained unchanged for possibly hundreds of years. These green low lying bush and shrub lands are filled with a sense of tranquility.
Silk Plantation - To the east, beyond the Wet Lands we have mapped out a complete tour along the Mekong River and on through the countryside to the Silk Research Station. The route comes back past an Irrigation Reservoir, then the Fishing Cranes & Wet Lands, to Nong Khai.
Flower Lands - The Flower Lands to the west of Nong Khai is an area of low lying lakes where flower cultivation is a very popular way of generating income. Most of the flowers produced in this area are well known international varieties, including chrysanthemums, roses, gladioli and marigolds. Demand for more exotic varieties is increasing, and farmers are already trying out different crops.
You frequently see charcoal burning ovens in the countryside. These big mounds of clay cover the smouldering wood, and they puff away for about a week. They will get broken open, the charcoal removed then be restocked with wood, sealed with a thick layer of wet clay and made air-tight. A fire is then lit underneath and it's left to smoke to produce another batch.
