Chiang Rai

Up in the northern tip of Thailand is Chiang Rai, a small but interesting city that is home to the famous Golden Triangle. Once a major trading route, Chiang Rai today welcomes tourists who are keen to soak in its relaxed atmosphere. From here it’s possible to stand in Thailand and see Laos and Myanmar at the same time, as the mighty Mekong River joins all three countries together. Head out of the city to visit ethnic groups who make their homes in the surrounding hills and maintain their beliefs and agricultural lifestyle. Or jump on an elephant and take a ride through the forests. Some of Thailand’s best-known mountains are near Chiang Rai, and some come with well-maintained gardens and former Royal homes. Hire a driver for the day and let them show you the sights and explain the history. The city itself has many fine temples and good museums and these are easily explored on foot. Sleeping options include a handful of five-star options, some of which are set up in the mountains while others are closer to town.
