Wat Phra That Chom Kitti

Wat Phra That Chom Kitti appeared the history of Lanna as a site of celebration when King Bhrama Maharaja gained independence from the Khmer Empire. At the time, the King’s army and Lanna people joined the grand religious ceremony to mark their victory and freedom around the temple area. Wat Phra That Chom Kitti thus serves as a significant commemorative site which recalls the sacrifice and bravery of Thai ancestors during the fight. Nowadays, a religious worship is held each year at the Phra That along with the ceremony to enhance the fortune of Thailand.

History

Wat Phra That Chom Kitti was originally called ‘Doi Noi’. According to the legend of Yonok, King Singhanawat, the first king of Yonok Dynasty, was presented a wisp of hair of Buddha so he had a chedi built on Doi Noi to house the granted hair. In 940 AD, King Pangkaraja of Yonok Dynasty and his son, King Bhrama Maharaja, were presented a combination of 16 sets of tripitakas and relics of Buddha, some of which he gave to Phaya Ruen Keaw who was the governor of Phayao. The given relics were then placed at Phra That Doi Chom Thong in Mueng Phayao, whereas the remaining relics were placed in a golden container which was enshrined in the chedi at Doi Noi. On this occasion, King Pangkaraja had a new chedi built over the original one.  The chedi is 7.2 metre wide and 13.2 metre tall. It has a squared base with twelve indented corners of the Chiang Saen period. Later on, the architecture had much dilapidated so Chao Fah Chaloem Mueng, the King of Chiang Saen, gathered his people to help with the restoration, which has kept the chedi in good condition until present.

Phra That Chom Kitti is a popular destination for believers, especially during the period of the annual religious ceremony while the chedi is wrapped with colourful pieces of cloth, which would bring auspiciousness according to traditional beliefs. For those who has a change to pray to the Phra That, it is believed that he or she will be blessed with prestige and fortunes as well as being lauded and assigned superior social position.
