WatPhraKaeo is yet another historic Chai Nat temple housing a beautiful square-based stupa, or Chedi. Within the temple grounds, there is a tall Chedi constructed with a harmonious blend of the Lawo and late Dvaravati styles, as well as a relic chamber with a recessed base in the Sukhothai and Sri Vijaya styles.
There also stands a Buddha image hall known as WihanLuangpho Chai, which has a unique story. A delicately carved sandstone lintel was found at the back of the enshrined Buddha image, depicting the god Indra riding an elephant named Erawan under a stylized shelter. It was created in a distinctive Khmer style, dating back to more than 1,000 years ago. It is believed that, at the decline of the Khmer empire, someone absconded with the lintel and carved the Buddha image out of it. Particularly fascinating is the head of the elephant, which is overturned, its trunk pointing upward, symbolic of a Buddhist belief that in order to be enlightened like the Lord Buddha, “One must overcome greed, hatred, and ignorance to find true happiness.”
WatPhraKaeo is located at Mu 10, TambonPhraek Si Racha, which is about 23 kilometers from the provincial town of Chai Nat. The temple is open daily from 8.00 am-5.00 pm.
