Wat Maha That (Yasothorn)
Category : Temple
Attraction Details :
WatMaha That is one of the most important temples of the province, located in Mueang district. The most important religious structures here include an ancient square stupa (Chedi) named Phra That Yasothon (also known as Phra That Anon), with a spire mimicking that of Phra That Phanom in NakhonPhanom province. Laotian-style architecture, popular in the late Ayutthaya period and early Rattanakosin period, can be seen here. The ancient Chedi is said to house the relics of Phra Anon, a state minister from Si SattanaKhanahut (Vientiane) who brought settlers to the area centuries ago.
There is also aIsan (Northeastern)-style ancient scripture hall named Ho Trai. Its doorway and door are made of beautiful carved pieces of wood with exquisite lacquer designs. The designs on the walls show a mix of artistic influences from Thailand’s central region. Built during the reigns of Rama IV and Rama V of the Rattanakosin period, the hall stores scriptures on dried palm leaves and art objects from Vientiane.
