The Songkla National Museum is located at Vichienrchom Road. It is Chinese architecture and is 100 years old. It is opposite to the city wall of Songkla Province. It was the castle of the assistant of the governor of Songkla province. Phraya Suntaranurak (Netra Na Songkla) who was the assistant of the governor of Songkla province from 2421 B.E. to 2437 B.E., he used the building as the accommodsation and the office of Phraya Vichitvorasast, the special governoron a duty of inspection of Songkla Province who later became Chao Phraya Yommaraj (Pan Sukhum). Since then, the building was used as the Nakorn Si Thammarat Province Administration and the City Hall of Songkla Province respectively in 2496 B.E. Later in 2516 B.E., the Fine Art Department enlisted the building as the archeological site and developed it to the National Museum. Moreover, on 25th September 2525 B.E., King Vajiravudh came as the presiding of the opening the Songkla National Museum ceremony to be the place for exhibiting art objects of the lower part of the southern region of Thailand as well as the learning resource on archeology, history of national arts, ethnology, Chinese arts, folk art such as completely exquisite door panel made from the old wooden of the governor’s official resident, dating back to the 24th Century of B.E., which made from wooden painted with color and decorated with pearls by professional Chinese craftsmanship which represents belief in tradition from Chinese religious literature, and the artifact in the Pre-historical Era from the Baan Chiang and Kanchanaburi resources. Furthermore, there is also the exhibition about artifact arts related to Na Songkla family which is the family of the governor of Songkla Province in the old days, et cetera.

 

The Songkla National Museum is built in Chinese architecture, and inside is the exhibition of artifact which are culture heritage and the uniqueness of the southern region of Thailand. The building of the museum is combined with Chinese and European architecture, the made-of-brick-and-marl limestone two-storey building, facing the West to the Lake of Songkla. The building is uplifted about 1 meter. It is built as the group of 4 houses connected with balcony. There are 2 staircases in the front and inside the middle ofthe yard. In the middle of the house is opened yard for planting or holding activities. In front of the building are the lawn and two halls standing at both sides and the back is also the lawn. The area around the buildings is lawn and the garden fenced in curved Chinese wall. The shielded door panel of thelong room on the upstairs is engraved with pattern telling Chinese literature and floral pattern or the pattern of the dragon flying through the clouds,the pattern of fire pearl. For the top of the post of the building is painted with colorful portrayal of Chinese gods or floral pattern. In the room, symbols of Yin Yang, Poi Po or Pa Gua are attached to the crossbeam in order to prevent danger according to Chinese belief. The roof is covered with two-layer tiles cemented curls. The roof ridge is curved with the upwards tails similar to the gable-end of Thai houses. Outside the building in the area of the wall under the triangular end of the roof are bas-reliefsculpture switching with colored painted portrayal of Chinese gods and floral pattern.
