Tham Krabok Monastery located at Phra Phuttabat in Saraburi province is a well-known drug rehabilitation receiving both Thai and foreign patients. Tham Krabok Monastery was established by a Buddhist monk, Charoen Parnchand in 1957. He has been given the place by the local people for Dharma practice purpose which is why later the place has become Tham Krabok rehabilitation or “Krabok Cave”. The venerable monk, Charoen Parnchand, was received “Magsaysay Award” award in public service category on 10th September, 1975.

The venerable monk Charoen Parnchand is one of the first social workers in Thailand who fight against drugs and help rehabilitate the addicts. During his younger age, the drug situation I Thailand is very serious. He was involved in the issue because of his work as a police officer. After the World War II ended, he resigned from the position and became a monk. After he started treating the addicts, there were 56,000 patients in total who received the medication until 1970.

In 1982, heroin was scattered everywhere in the world. Modern medical treatment could not cure those addicts permanently; this was where Tham Krabok Monastery came in. The organization, “East-West Detox” in England accepted the treatment of Tham Krabok and believed that it helped cure the patients 90 percent.

The cure process starts by the physical treatment. The first 5days, patients have to drink herbal drinks and then lots of water until they vomit. Then they will be sent to the herbal steam bath filled with lemongrasses, castor leaves, Lalang grasses and swamp cabbages for relaxing the nerves and purge the toxics. After 10 days, patients will receive mental treatment in the forms of Dharma lessons, recreation and skill practices; they will then start to recover physically and mentally until they are able to live normally in the society.

Though the venerable monk Charoen Parnchand has long passed away, this monastery still follows his footstep with strong determination.
