Tham Pla–Namtok Pha Suea National Park

Tham Pla–Namtok Pha Suea National Park covers the area of 488 square kilometers in Muang District and Pang Mapha District of Mae Hong Son. The topography of the National Park consist of rugged mountain ranges and various kinds of forests, including hill evergreen forest, pine forest, mixed deciduous forest and dry dipterocarp forest.

The park’s main attraction is Tham Pla (fish cave) located in Ban Huay Pha, Huay Pha Sub-district, 17 kilometers from Muang District. To get there, take highway No. 1095 (Mae Hong Son – Pai route.) The cave is located at the 191st – 192nd kilometers of the route and can be accessible all year round. Surrounded by streams, forest and mountain, Tham Pla is located on the foot of the hill. It is a large pond, with 2 meters in width and 1.5 meters in depth, which is always abundant with water flowing from the cave underneath the mountain. Numerous large-sized fish such as Moong fish or Kung fish, a large-scaled fish, in the same family as carp, live in the pond. Even though there are so many of them, people do not catch these fish because there is a belief that they are the fish of god and people who eat them will suffer misfortune.

Another attraction of the park is Namtok Pha Suea which its water flows from Mae Sa-nga Waterfall in Burma. Namtok Pha Suea is a 10-meter tall and 15-meter wide, middle-sized waterfall. During rainy season, the water fills the cliff face, resembling a covering mat, which becomes the name of the waterfall, Pha Suea (the mat cliff.) There is less water during dry season, but we can still say that the waterfall is abundant with water all year round. Despite the beautiful rocks and the perfect atmosphere for relaxation, the national park does not permit swimming because of the strong current and the deep valley. Perfect travel season is during July – September. Namtok Pha Suea is located in Mok Jum Pae Sub-district, on highway No. 1095, Mae Hong Son – Pai route, on the 191st kilometer. From an intersection to Pang Tong Palace, the waterfall is about 100 meters from the road. The total distance from Mae Hong Son town to Namtok Pha Suea is approximately 26 kilometers.
