In the past, salt wasNan's major exporting product thanks to a large-scale salt production in Bo Kluea district.  Salt trade with other cities, such as Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai, Nan, Mueang Sa (Wiang Sa District nowadays) and Phrae, had earned Nan wealth as great as a number of enemies who would eager to possess salt pits, which was led to many conflicts.

There are two important salt production venues inNan. One at Wa River watershed area, consisting of two large pits, while the second one is at theNanRiverwatershed area, where there are five large pits and many tiny ones. At present, the locals still preserve the traditional method of salt making by dropping bucket to the deep saline well and send it through bamboo sticks to each household’s storage ponds. It will be boiled until the water evaporates, leaving only dry salt. Locals, who sell homemade salt in front of their house, are friendly for visitors who want to watch their ancient process. They will stop producing salt during rainy season from August to October.
