Kirdkao Observatory has been officially operating since 14 December 1996 to distribute astronomical knowledge regarding our planet and space, and to foster environmental awareness for juveniles. The observatory lives on the philosophy “the beauty of the universe can raise awareness that mankind and nature are one, and thus we should live in peace and treat everything in a creative way.” It is located at Lum Lung subdistrict, Bo phloi district, Kanchanaburi.
Kirdkao Observatory is a two-storey building on a hill. The observatory dome on the 2nd floor contains a 16-inch reflecting telescope with an equatorial mount, while the ground floor stores several potable telescopes for fieldworks. The surrounding area of the observatory comprises 24 capsule houses. Each house can accommodate 2 people, so the maximum number of guests at a time is 48 people.
Thailand Research Fund (TRF) offered research grants to Kirdkao Observatory between the year 1993 – 2011 to support the establishment of “Learning module for Earth Science and Astronomy (LESA)”. The center not only provided training courses on conducting research for teachers and students, but also distributed knowledge on the website www.lesa.biz. Nonetheless, when the funding scheme ended on 31 October 2011, the working group disbanded and unfortunately Kirdkao Observatory had to discontinue the public service.
Kirdkao Observatory is currently open solely to academic institutes. Due to the fact that the costs incurred from arranging each activity is a great deal, it is required that the minimum number of participants must exceed 40 people and that an individual is charged 1,200 baht (2 days, 1 night). Moreover, it is necessary to make an appointment in advance because the working team has to commute from Bangkok. For further information, please contact Kiratika Suksithong via email email@example.com or call 081-182-0606.
