King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology at Wa Kor is an important place in the history of science in Thailand. This is due to the fact that King Mongkut made calculations and predicted two years in advance that a total solar eclipse was to occur here at Wa Kor. He, together with scientists and foreign dignitaries, did go there to view the eclipse. After that, in 1990, the government had a plan to open a science and technology park here at Wa Kor. King Bhumibol graciously gave a name “King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology at Wa Kor, Prachuap Khiri Khan Province” in honor of King Mongkut, the father of the study of science in Thailand. In addition, the Ministry of Education uses the park as an education centre in response to the policy to expand learning opportunities in science and technology. King Mongkut Memorial Park of Science and Technology has now become one of the nation’s main learning centres. The park consists of three connected main buildings with twenty-five learning stations which are divided into three fields of study:
1.Science, technology and energy which holds exhibitions on King Mongkut, the father of the study of science in Thailand, and on different types of technology, e.g. transportation technology, professional technology, computer technology, etc.
2.Astronomy and space science which provides information about the history of the universe, space technology and Thai kings with astronomy
3.Study of nature and environment which holds exhibitions on nature, world’s natural resources, ecosystems, birds, and insects. Furthermore, there is an aquarium which showcases a variety of saltwater, freshwater and brackish-water fishes. It also features an underwater walkway along which you can see the differences among living things at various depths of water as if you were actually in the deep sea. There is also a butterfly park where you can learn about the life cycle of butterflies and see around twenty species of local butterflies as well as butterfly specimens.
For those who are interested in camping, the park provides a science camp, an environmental camp, an amateur astronomer camp, a bird watching camp and an energy saving camp with a wide range of activities, e.g. bird watching, sky watching, a walk rally and beach activities. The accommodations can hold up to 120-200 guests and tents are also available.
