The Chumphon Horticultural Research Center is Thailand’s first and leading coconut research center, established in 1960. It is focused on developing improved strains of coconut trees for local farmers and training them in the best techniques for raising and processing the coconuts, especially the Mawa variety bred from African and Malaysia strains. Some 50 coconut varieties are conserved at the center, which began experimenting with coconut hybrids in 1975 and has produced a number of hybrids that perform well in local conditions. The center also helps farmers cultivating pepper, coffee and cocoa. It has an area of over 270 acres. The office and residences are near the entrance to the center with land planted in pepper, coffee, cocoa and coconuts in the rear.
The Chumphon Horticultural Research Center is open 9.00 am-4.00 pm. Located at Moo 2, Phet Kasem Road, Tambon Wisai Tai, in Amphoe Sawi, it can be reached on Highway 41, traveling north from Chumphon city.
