Chiang Saen Lake or Nong Bong Khai Non-hunting Area is a well-known touristic place among bird watchers as it is a habitat to many water birds and farmland birds. During winter, there are a huge number of bird migrations including numerous rare birds. It is the perfect touristic place for both family and couples to hang out surround by the lake, the forest and fine winter mist.
    In the past, this area is a small swampland which later is constructed into a dam and later into a lake. This natural conservation area is protected by the national park, Wildlife and Plant Conservation. The lake is 5 kilometers away from Chiang Saen city. It is a perfect serene place for relaxing. Surrounding the lake is the view of hillocks. Accommodations, rented bicycles and canoeing boats are available at the resort. Other activities include overnight camping near the lake to fish or admiring the unforgettable beautiful sunset contrasting to the horizon or walking on the wooden bridge in the trekking trip. The highlight of the waterfall is farmland and water birds watching as they are flying, feeding or staying above the lake. This place is one of the most abundant habitats for wild ducks in Thailand such as common Pochard and Ferruginous Pochards. The perfect time for a visit is during the winter season. When the monsoon comes from the north, numerous flocks of birds will migrate here to avoid the cold such as Bikal teals, wild ducks, Ruddy ducks, Eurasian Wigeon and Indian Spot-billed Ducks. The lake is open every day and there is no entrance fee.
    To visit, from Chiangrai bus station, take the highway 1. When you reach the intersection to Chiang Saen district at 33 kilometers, take the highway 1016 Mae Chan-Chiang Saen district route. At km. 27 at Ban Ku Tao, take the ARD road, Ban Ku Tao-Doi Ngam route. Continue for 2 kilometers and you will find Nong Bong Khai Non-hunting Area with the big sign at the front. Total distance from Chiangrai to Nong Bong Khai Non-hunting Area is approximately 62 kilometers.
