Attraction Details :
The Bang Prok Community is located next to a temple, Wat Hong Pathummawat. It is an age-old community that has successfully preserved and revitalized the Mon ethnic minority culture. The people in the community worked together to build a library in an old boat, which now rests under the shade of a banyan tree, aged more than 100 years. It has become a center for learning and research for Mon and Thai youths. In addition, many classes are taught at the library, including computer classes, traditional Thai dancing classes, traditional Thai long drum classes and other traditional Thai music classes. The Boat Library serves as a center for locally made products as well, being both the production site and store for community products.
A playground is provided for children, and a welcome center sometimes holds Mon musical and dance performances. Traditional Mon cuisine is also cooked here, for instance, Khao Chae (steamed rice in cold scented water, served with condiments) or Kalamae (Thai rice caramel). Mon cultural shows such as the Hang Hong-Thong Takhap procession, a traditional Thai medicine center, organic fertilizer production center and souvenirs made from remnants round out the activities and goods on offer.
The library is open daily from 8.00 am-5.00 pm. For more information, please contact Khun Chaluai Kawaonak, the chairman of the community, at 0 2581 1252 or 08 6355 8306.
