Widely known as the “Ancient Palace” (Wang Bo Ran), this is the area where the residential palaces of Ayutthaya kings were once located. The Royal Palace was first established in 1350 when King U-Thong founded Ayutthaya, and it was later expanded by following kings. It served as the residence of the kings until the end of the second Ayutthaya-Burmese war, of which Ayutthaya lost and the Royal Palace was severely damaged people escaped and left it behind. The ruins of the buildings and mansions still remain on site, and if you are wondering what was the place like in its heyday, the Grand Palace in Bangkok is actually a simplified version of the original one.
