Experience the hill tribe peoples’ way of life at the Ban I Mat-I Sai Hill Tribe Cultural Center and Karen Village, complete with a replica Karen tribe home. The home’s raised lower floor, thatched roof and bamboo walls on display at the center are still used in Thailand, Karen traditions preserved and alive to this day. Cultural performances such as sword dancing and shows of respect to the sacred Pho tree are on offer during certain festivals in April. Hill tribe volunteers are also on staff to take visitors on tours of nearby cultural sights.
Handcrafted artisanal goods are also on offer, ranging from woven cloths colored with natural dyes and bamboo baskets to seasonal items such as Thai chilis. Visitors may stay overnight at the nearest Karen village, the Chao Wat Yeng Daeng Village, or in the cultural center itself, which also houses the Hill Tribe Museum.
To get there, from Amphoe Ban Rai, drive along Highway 3011, Ban Rai-Phu Bon route for about 20 kilometers to the end of the asphalt road. Continue on the laterite road for one more kilometer.
