Amphoe Samko, Ang Thong
Historic Amphoe Samko, or Samko District, is approximately 25 kilometers away from Ang Thong town. The area, much chronicled in Thailand’s history, was the site of Burmese attackers’ encampment prior to their massive attack on Ayutthaya. In addition, troops belonging to King Naresuan the Great and Phra Ekathotsarot (a military leader) also marched through Amphoe Samko en route to Suphan Buri province, where they defeated their enemies in fierce battles on elephant back.
Nowadays, the area is renowned for its local traditions and folk arts. Lotus farms, coconut plantations, and mixed orchards have replaced many of the typical Thai rice fields through the years. Its musical tradition, where female and male parts are seen as equally important, is part of a Thai folk music revival.
